“Bulgaria, the most unhappy country in the EU,” is an ongoing project that started in 2021 upon learning that Bulgaria, once again, claimed the title of the unhappiest country in the European Union for several consecutive years. I traveled to the country with just one question in mind: How does it feel to be in such an unhappy place?

I conducted interviews, wrote articles on the subject, tried to understand the people, and captured intimate portraits of them. Soon, a small and passionate group of individuals emerged, who, for various reasons, felt connected to the issue. More questions than answers arose. What is happiness, anyway? And if defining it seems challenging, how do you measure such a thing?
